Your Complete Guide to Early Pregnancy Symptoms

If you see bleeding, try not to panic. Lie down and try to relax a little. Keep an eye on the amount, frequency and color of the blood (brown, bright red, etc…). Go ahead and call your doctor and follow her advice. She may not want to evaluate you unless the bleeding persists or becomes heavy. On the other hand, she may put you on bed rest or want to come in so she can check on the baby. While bleeding during pregnancy is very common, don’t ever hesitate to call your doctor, even at night if need be.

Cramping

Mild cramping and a pulling sensation in the lower abdomen are both very normal in early pregnancy. As the embryo grows, the uterus will stretch and grow to accommodate the pregnancy, causing that pulling sensation or cramping. In addition, constipation and excess gas are also symptoms of early pregnancy and can cause cramping or abdominal discomfort.

When to Call the Doctor

There are a few symptoms that, if you notice them, should be promptly reported to your physician. Sharp and severe pain that is only on one side of your abdomen or very heavy bleeding (i.e. soaking through a pad in one hour or less) should be reported immediately. Because this can signal an emergency situation, if you can’t get in touch with your doctor, you should proceed to the closest emergency room.
