Still Waiting for Your Period?

Waiting to take a pregnancy test can easily make you anxious as you try to determine whether your symptoms are either early pregnancy symptoms or those of an impending period.

Early pregnancy symptoms

There are many symptoms that women experience in early pregnancy. These include:

  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Breast tenderness
  • Cramping or a pulling sensation in the lower abdomen
  • Frequent urination

The most common pregnancy symptom is a missed period. But keep in mind that implantation bleeding, bleeding that occurs when the embryo implants in the uterine wall, can appear similar to a menstrual bleed. This is bleeding that occurs between six to twelve days after ovulation and is usually a light pink or brown color. It usually lasts only a day or two and is completely normal.

With the exception of the missed period, these symptoms are also signs your period appearing, so it can be difficult to determine what is going on until you either get a period or a positive pregnancy test.

Every woman’s experience with early pregnancy symptoms is different; some women begin to experience nausea or vomiting immediately, others don’t have any early pregnancy symptoms at all.

Spotting in Pregnancy

Spotting and bleeding in early pregnancy is a very common phenomenon and doesn’t necessarily mean that you are having a miscarriage. Many women bleed throughout their pregnancy and go on to deliver a healthy baby; and many women miscarry and never bleed. It can still be scary though, even if you know that.
