What You Need to Know About Your Child’s Development

Baby Talk Only Sounds Nonsensical

While baby talk sounds simple or nonsensical, these skills are the building blocks for speech development ““ how else can baby learn to say more advanced words if they can’t say basic sounds and words first? They must be able to experiment with the movement of their mouth and the sounds coming out of it in order to hone the skills required for speech development.

There are many things you can do to promote normal speech milestones. First, recognize baby’s need to make noise and encourage her to practice “˜speaking.’ Giving her the opportunity to exercise her vocal muscles is the most important thing that you can do for speech development. Second, speak to her. Explain what you are doing and what she seems to be noticing. Even if she can’t physically express what she sees, trust me, she’s soaking up all of the information around her. This helps her make connections about the world around her and will eventually give her the vocabulary to describe it.

Keep in mind that speech development varies widely between children; its perfectly normal for a child to develop either quicker than these milestones, or even slightly behind. Please don’t hesitate, though, to speak with your doctor if you have any questions at all about your child’s developmental milestones or baby talk.
