An Important Guide to Taking Short Family Road Trips with Kids

Fast forward to today. My husband and I lucked out by having a relative that has a vacation home in the middle of the state just under two hours from our house. So our favorite short family road trip is to what we call “the lodge” a big log cabin where the kids can run around outside and we can explore the wilderness.

In our case, traveling to a “vacation home” like this where all of the activity is in one place made it especially easy for us when we had a baby in tow. Since our activities were all on the same property, the baby could be inside taking a nap while we could congregate with family in the kitchen or on the front porch. Vacation homes are nice because you can pack your own food and even do laundry there.

But for families who don’t have a ready made place to go, there are still a lot of options. Regardless of where we are, my kids LOVE staying in hotels. Why not consider jumping in the car, going a few towns over and staying in an inexpensive hotel or bed & breakfast? Add dinner, a movie, maybe some mini golf and this could be one of your family’s favorite short family road trips!

Web sites like Groupon and Living Social have recently launched travel divisions that offer really great deals. If you wait a while, one will pop up in your neck of the woods.

Family trips are great memory-makers. You just need to slow down from your everyday life, jump in the car (with a little bit of planning) and GO!
