From that landmark study, you can clearly see that the “fertility diets” of these women were healthy diets. The diet is fairly easy to follow. The main tenants of the “fertility diet” include:
- Limit trans fats; use unsaturated fats instead ““ Trans fats are unhealthy. They clog your arteries, and harm your heart and blood vessels. The fertile women in the study ate more unsaturated fats than trans fats. Both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats improve your body’s sensitivity to insulin and they cool inflammation. Both of these help enhance your fertility. When cooking, choose vegetable oils. Eat cold-water fish, like salmon, as well as nuts and seeds.
- Replace one serving of meat with a vegetable protein ““ Lean meats are a good source of protein, but you shouldn’t eat meats all the time. For one meal, instead of meat, choose a vegetable protein, such as soybeans, tofu, beans, peas, or nuts.
- Choose slowly digested carbohydrates ““ When choosing your carbs, you’ll want to consume slowly digested carbohydrates that are rich in fiber. For example, whole grains, vegetables, whole fruits and beans.
- Go with whole milk ““ For some reason, low-fat dairy products (like skim milk) tend to promote infertility. Whole milk products ““ like full fat ice cream ““ actually enhances your fertility.
- Start taking a prenatal multivitamin ““ Make sure that you choose a multivitamin that has at least 400 micrograms of folic acid.
This “fertility diet” may be especially helpful to women who have ovulation-related infertility. If you have a physical reason for your infertility, such as blocked fallopian tubes, this diet won’t work that well for you.
