How Your Age Affects Pregnancy

Once you reach your 30’s, you have probably had time to develop a strong relationship with your spouse, have a stable income and living arrangements, and have had time to travel. Some women find that the 30’s are the best time to start a family. Although the quality and quantity of your eggs is declining, you will still be able to become pregnant within three to six months, unless you have other fertility problems.

As you approach the age of 35, there is a significant drop in the amount of eggs you have, which could make it harder to become pregnant. Your egg quality also declines, which increases the chances of having a baby with chromosomal abnormalities or birth defects.

Pregnancy in Your 40’s

Once you reach 40, you may wonder if is still possible to start a family. You have probably had time to enjoy life by traveling or building your career, and you may feel ready to become a mom. Research has shown that older women usually make better choices during pregnancy, such as not smoking and getting proper prenatal care. Older moms are usually mature and have more patience, which means they are better equipped emotionally to have a baby.

By the time you reach your 40’s, your egg supply has dropped tremendously, which may make it hard to become pregnant. If you have been trying to become pregnant for several months without success, you may need the use of fertility drugs to help you conceive.  Your body is also not as physically fit as it once was, which may lead to you developing pregnancy related conditions, such as high blood pressure or gestational diabetes. Your age can also cause certain conditions to become worse, such as stiff or sore joints and varicose veins. You may feel fatigued and lack energy during pregnancy, as well. Your egg quality has continued to decline, which increases the chances of having a baby with birth defects.

Age affects pregnancy during each stage of life, so it is important to receive proper prenatal care and live a healthy lifestyle no matter what age you are.
