USA Economy Woes Affects Birth Rate

America’s Birth Rate is Dropping

The birth rate in America has dropped progressively since 2008 when the
recession hit, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center, Fox News reports.

In 2007, there were 69.6 babies born per 1,000 women of childbearing age, but
in 2010, that number dropped to 64.7, the study found. The Pew researchers note that the economy is not conclusively to blame, but changes in personal income, per capita GDP, state-level foreclosures and unemployment rates suggest that it probably is, according to CNN.

The Pew analysis supported by history, too. A similar phenomenon occurred during the Great Depression in the 1930s and the oil shock in the 1970s, demographer Carl Haub told the news source.
