Embryo adoption is a relatively new process. Couples who have ceased fertility treatment have donated their leftover embryos to a national bank, where they can be adopted by other couples. These embryos can be transferred either into the female partner, or a gestational carrier. The National Embryo Donation Center provides a wealth of information about embryo adoption and can even help you get started immediately.
Child-Free Living
Some couples opt to not pursue any of these options and instead commit to a life without children. Many find fulfillment through coaching sports teams, being a scouts leader or volunteering with youth organizations, and knowing that they’ve made a difference in children’s lives.
The important thing to know is that there are no right answers, only what is right for each couple. Some couples will stop treatment after one IVF cycle, others will stop only when they’ve exhausted all possibilities. Some couples will immediately pursue adoption, others may try fostering a child for a while with the hopes of eventually adopting. Many couples travel, become active in their communities or develop hobbies, both on their own and as a couple, to find happiness outside of being a parent.
Whatever your choice is, make sure that both of you are on the same page and that you are both at peace with the decision.
