Having an eye exam while pregnant is an important part of your pre-natal and pregnancy care. Some women avoid having eye exams because they believe that having their eyes dilated while pregnant is unsafe. This is, however, untrue. Have a complete and comprehensive eye exam during pregnancy is totally safe.
Good Eye Health and Your Fetus
Maintaining good eye health during pregnancy is also important to the heath of your fetus. Gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and migraines can all affect the health of your child if left untreated or if treated incorrectly. Drinking alcohol, smoking or using drugs while pregnant can result in your child being born with crossed eyes, lazy eye or refractive errors.
Proper eye health and care during pregnancy is an important part of a woman’s health. If you experience any changes in your vision, be sure to contact your eye doctor right away. If you suffer from any preexisting eye conditions, diabetes or glaucoma, always let your doctor know prior to becoming pregnant so that he can carefully monitor your eye health.
