In July, 2010, a news story circulated stating that regular consumption of chocolate could “halve a woman’s risk of giving birth prematurely.” This story was based on an inaccurate reading of the 2008 study results. Both the 2008 and August, 2010 studies omit making broad statements about the benefits of consuming chocolate. What they do is leave open the question of chocolate’s benefits during pregnancy for further study. Both studies also give permission, though not implicitly, for pregnant women to indulge in a bit of chocolate now and again.
Both preeclampsia and gestational hypertension are serious conditions and can adversely affect the health of both the mother and baby. While chocolate may have beneficial affects on these conditions, ensure that you are closely monitored by your doctor to prevent complications.
Despite the health benefits, chocolate may not be safe for every pregnant woman to consume. Always discuss your dietary questions with your doctor, especially if you have gestational diabetes. If, however, you are having a normal, healthy pregnancy, then by all means enjoy a bit of dark chocolate now and again.
