When to Talk to the Doctor
While there is a wide variation for what is normal at this stage, normal milestones for babies between the ages of 6 months and one year include:
• Turning towards the direction of a sound
• Attempting to mimic words and sounds
• Saying one to two words
• Understand “no” or other instructions, like “Please take a bite”
If your child isn’t exhibiting any of these behaviors, you’ll want to mention it to the doctor at your next appointment. There are many reasons for delays in achieving speech milestones. The good news is that many of them are treatable; the earlier you can get your child into speech therapy or other intervention, the sooner they’ll be able to catch up.
