Pregnancies Can Be Successful After Kidney Transplant, New Study Finds

A Healthy Pregnancy After Kidney Transplant

A large majority of women who have had a kidney transplant are able to have a healthy pregnancy after kidney transplant, a new study found.

The study, published by the American Journal of Transplantation, was led by Dr. Dorry Segev of Johns Hopkins University and included a systematic review and analysis of articles published about pregnancies of women who had had undergone kidney transplants. The articles, published between 2000 and 2010, showed that 73.5 percent of women had a healthy pregnancy after kidney transplant, one that they had obtained within the past few years.

Researchers wanted to understand the relationship between kidney transplants and issues with pregnancies because women who conceive a baby after such a procedure experience relatively high rates of complications during the pregnancy, including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and preterm delivery.
