Moving to Store Shelves
Currently, it is not clear when the over the counter morning after pill would become available on store shelves. Prior to the court decision, Plan B One-Step could only be purchased from the pharmacy with proof the buyer was at least age 17.
The product will need to undergo a packaging reset to reflect its new status. The pill is expected to cost around $50.
The drug chief for the FDA, Dr. Janet Woodcock, stated that the over the counter morning after pill is a large step toward reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in the United States. Fewer pregnancies would mean fewer abortions, which is another hot political topic.
Overall, the FDA’s move to make emergency contraception easier to obtain is progress for women’s health concerns.
