Syphilis can be transmitted to the baby through the placenta or during a vaginal birth. Having a syphilis test is optional but should be done if you have any suspicions of having this disease. Syphilis can cause pregnant women to miscarry, or it can cause the fetus to be stillborn.
If you’re pregnant or considering becoming pregnant, then it is imperative that your doctor has an accurate picture of your health. There are mandatory and optional tests, and your doctor will help you decide which are appropriate for your condition. The doctor may also suggest further genetic testing if you’re at risk of passing on a genetic condition to your child, or if you’re over 35 years of age.
