Phthalates are a class of chemicals found in a wide range of consumer products, from toys to shampoos, and are known to disrupt the endocrine system. While phthalate exposure has been studied for its potential to harm humans, the studies have not been entirely conclusive. In fact, the FDA and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has pronounced that they are safe for use in consumer products, though Congress ruled that they be excluded from children’s toys in 2008.
