Transfers to the hospital aren’t common, but having a plan worked out can make the process much smoother, especially when you are in labor and are nervous, scared and in pain.
Preparing for a Home Birth
Taking a child-birthing class is essential when you are preparing for a home birth. Learning about childbirth and what to expect can make the process a little easier, especially in regards to pain management techniques. Having your husband attend the class with you will be helpful so that he can support you without being nervous wreck or uncertain about the whole process.
Your midwife will probably give you a list of supplies that she’ll want you to have available during your birth. You’ll also want to think about where you will deliver the baby ““ on your bed, on the couch or in the bathtub? Not sure? Plan for a few different options and make sure you have protective plastic on any surface that you won’t want to see stained. Try to gather all of these materials well in advance of your due date so that you are not unprepared when you go into labor.
For many women, having a home birth is a viable option. Make sure, though, that you do your research and speak with your doctor and midwife before committing to a home birth.
