How to Speak With The Boss About Maternity Leave Like a Pro

Talk to your Boss

Let your boss know what your current plans are and how much time you need off. Make sure to notify your boss immediately if a situation arises when you need to leave earlier than planned. If you think you may want more time off after the baby is born, talk to your boss about returning part-time or working from home. Express your desire to stay with the company and let your boss know that you are committed to balancing your career and your family life. Express your needs and wishes, but also try to make the time you will be away go smoother by offering to type up instruction sheets or train a temporary replacement. Your history with the job makes you valuable to the company, so your boss will me more inclined to negotiate with you rather than hire someone else.
