The Advantages
Older mothers have several distinct advantages over younger mothers. A woman over the age of 40 has likely already established her career and is often in a better position to negotiate a more flexible schedule. They also typically make more money than a younger woman and can afford the things a baby needs without suffering any financial stress because of the baby’s arrival.
In addition, many older women have already been through the relationship ups and downs that come with younger women. They may be more emotionally secure and, therefore, better prepared to handle being a mother. Age also brings a greater sense of self-awareness and self-confidence. Both of these traits can be more easily taught and instilled in young children if the mother is already confident in herself.
Of course, every woman is different, but choosing to have a baby over the age of 40 no longer has the stigma attached to it that it once did. Having a baby over 40 may include added health risks but modern medicine and science help women deliver healthy babies despite these risks, every day.
If you’re a woman over the age of 40, only you can decide if you should have a child or not. Discuss the risks with your doctor and weigh them carefully against the joy of having a child, because having a child at any age is a blessing indeed.
