Whenever you buy produce ““ whether it’s organic or not ““ make sure that you thoroughly wash it. If you can’t afford to buy organic fruits and vegetables, remove the outer skin or peel whenever you can. Always buy domestic produce; imported fruits and vegetables from other countries may have higher level of pesticides.
The Environmental Working Group releases their list of the dirty dozen (foods that are highest in pesticides) and their clean 15 (foods that are lowest in pesticides). As a pregnant woman, you can protect your unborn baby from unnecessary pesticides by buying the organic version of the following “dirty dozen”: apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, spinach, imported nectarines, imported grapes, sweet bell peppers, potatoes, domestic blueberries, lettuce, and kale/collard greens.
