As a standard guideline, both men and women should take at least 15 milligrams of zinc per day to boost fertility. However, in some cases a higher dose may be necessary. Consult with your doctor to determine what’s right for you.
Purchase zinc as a supplement or eat more zinc-rich foods to get your daily dose. Foods high in zinc and safe for preconception and pregnancy include red meat, peanuts, whole grains, beans, dairy products, and just in time for the holidays, pumpkin seeds.
Zinc side effects
There can be side effects if too much zinc is consumed. Do not take more than 40 milligrams of zinc per day unless directed by your doctor as an overload of zinc can cause fatigue, abdominal pain and fever.
