Zinc increases fertility
If you are trying to conceive, add zinc to your prenatal checklist. Research shows low levels of zinc can negatively affect fertility in both men and women so zinc supplements and/or more zinc-rich foods are recommended.
What role does zinc play in fertility?
An immune-boosting mineral, zinc is crucial to fetal development during pregnancy, and since it promotes healthy cell division, it is critical during the early stages of conception. Additionally, a study in the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics indicates that zinc has a positive benefit for women undergoing IVF to conceive.
Zinc also is important to male fertility. For men, the mineral can help promote healthy testosterone levels and increase sperm counts. In fact, a study published in Fertility and Sterility showed that men with lower sperm levels also had a zinc deficiency. Another study, published in Nutrition Research, showed that both fertile and infertile men who took zinc and folic acid supplements had an increase in overall sperm production.
