Third Month
Going into the third month, development of the basic physical structures continues as the bones and joints develop in baby’s arms and toes. In addition, the head rounds out as the neck continues to grow and mature. Baby’s eyelids develop and eventually close to protect the new eyes.
Up until this point, baby’s head is the predominant part of the developing baby. In the coming weeks, rapid growth of the baby’s body will make the head more proportional. Also, towards the end of this month, baby’s external genitalia will begin to develop into either a penis or clitoris and labia.
And all of this is only the beginning. Baby will continue to mature and grow for the next six months, eventually developing into a fully-grown infant. Fetal development in the first trimester is an important part of the process, as it sets the stage for future growth.
